In the past people used to name their children after saints and religious figures. Today, the latest trend in baby names takes pop-culture to a new level, naming children after car models (Bentley, Celica, Infiniti...), hair dye (L'Oreal), popular perfumes (Chanel, Dior..., food (Del Monte) and even after canned pinnes and a camera (Canon).
Designer firms and types of clothing are also well represented (Armani, Denim, Tommy from Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, Fendi...).
In the year 2000 brand names have risen in popularity resulting in - Chanel (269 girls), Timberland (6 boys), Porsche (24 girls) and Armani (273 boys and 298 girls). Perfumes and automobiles seems to be the most common. Chanel is fairly popular, Camry, Evian (bottled water), Fanta (soft drinks), Chardonnay (wine) also turns up quite regularly.
Brand names may be popular because of a couple of reasons; they can be echoes of other known names - Chanel is similar to Chantal... or aspiration of parents for some consumer products that they will likely never be able to afford or a growing desire on the part of the parents to mark their children out as different or associate them with money and exclusivity (Rolls-Royce, Porsche...) which reflects the material hopes.
