::  Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672)

   Born in Scherpenzeel in West-Stellingwerf,
   Friesland, where he studied at the former
   University of Franeker and became governor
   of Curaçao in 1643 and director-general of
   New Holland (which was renamed New York)
   in 1647.
   He drove the Swedes out of the Delaware
   river region in 1655. He had to surrender to the
   British in 1664. 
   He died eight years later in February 1672,
   in New York. Stuyvesant was buried in a chapel,
   on the site of which in 1799 was erected
   St. Mark's Church.
  
   Stuyvesant and his family were large land owners
   in the northeastern portion of New Amsterdam,
   and the Stuyvesant name is currently associated
   with the Stuyvesant Town housing complex
   and the elite school, Stuyvesant High School in
   New York.
::  Mata Hari (1876-1917)

    Mata Hari (Malaysian for 'Eye of the Day'), born in
    Leeuwarden as Margaretha Geertruida Zelle,
    she became famous as a dance-hostess in Paris
    during World-War I. 
    She had relationships with high-ranking German
    officers, which caused her to be executed on
    grounds of espionage.
    A film which starred Sylvia Kristel was made
    about her life.
::  Willem Barentsz (1550-1597)

    Sailor and cartographer. He was born on the
    island of Terschelling.
    His rise to fame was made during his wintering
    on the isle of Nova Zembla in the northern Arctic.
    The surrounding sea was named after him.
::  Maurits Cornelis Escher

    Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was born
    in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. He is one of the
    world's most famous graphic artists.
    Escher played with architecture, perspective and
    impossible spaces, most famous for his so-called
    impossible structures.
    During his lifetime he made 448 lithographs, wood
    engravings, woodcuts and over 2000 drawings 
    and sketches.
    Apart from being a graphic artist, Escher
    illustrated books, designed tapestries, postage
    stamps and murals.
    Like some of his famous predecessors, Dürer,
    Leonardo da Vinci, Holbein...Escher was
    left-handed.
